The area receives most of its rainfall in the form of thunderstorms with occasional heavy but brief rainfallsThunderstorms occur throughout the year, but are most frequent in the spring. Interesting Dallas/Texas Facts:

  • Texas is the only state to enter the United States by treaty instead of territorial annexation.
  • The state was an independent nation from 1836 to 1845.
  • The first Six Flags park, Six Flags Over Texas, opened in 1961. The name originated from the six nations that have governed Texas during its history. These flags include Spain, France, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the United States of America, and the Confederate States of America. READ MORE.
  • The Dallas Arts District is the largest urban arts district in the United States (68 acres).
  • The Dallas/Fort Worth airport is larger than Manhattan Island. The airport also has one of the world’s largest parking lots.
  • The Dallas Cowboys stadium is big enough to fit the Statue of Liberty.
  • Professional sports are big in Dallas. The area is home to five professional teams.
  • The State Fair of Texas, held in Fair Park, is the largest such fair in the United States.

Sixth Floor Museum

The Sixth Floor Museum, located within the former Texas School Book Depository building, chronicles the assassination and legacy of President John F. Kennedy and explores the history of the 1960s. The Museum’s collections comprise a wide-range of materials that help tell the story of the assassination of President Kennedy and its aftermath, as well as explore his life and legacy and the history and culture of Dallas and the 1960s. Material types include documents and manuscripts, photographs, newspapers and magazines, three-dimensional artifacts, and audio-visual recordings—including early 1960s television and radio broadcasts, home movies and oral history interviews. You can view a selection of the Museum’s collections through the online digital database. New content is added frequently. 

Hours are WED - SUN 10am to 5pm. Ticket cost is $25. Children 0 - 5 are free.

Dallas Museum of Art

As one of the 10 largest art museums in the United States, the Dallas Museum of Art (DMA) provides access to some of the world’s most important masterpieces and other significant works. The DMA is the largest of the museums in the Dallas Arts District, which is also the largest arts district in the country. Spanning multiple floors and numerous galleries, the museum’s permanent collection boasts more than 25,000 works with some pieces dating back more than five millennia. Because of the vast collection size, works rotate in and out of public view, but it’s easy to see exactly what’s new before any visit.

General admission to the DMA has been free since 2013 and visitors must reserve tickets in advance. Throughout the year, guests can also experience a variety of temporary exhibitions, some of which require a paid ticket to a separate part of the museum.

 

Perot Museum of Nature & Science

The Perot Museum of Nature and Science is a natural history and science museum in Dallas, Texas in Victory Park. The museum was named in honor of Margot and Ross Perot. Known for its stunning features and eco-friendly designs by world-renowned architect, Thom Mayne, the Perot Museum of Nature and Science is a jewel in the heart of Downtown Dallas.

The museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesday - Saturday; 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. The museum is closed on Tuesdays. General admission tickets are $15-$25 for non-members. Tickets must be pre-purchased for specific dates and times for entry.
